高爾夫球的形狀正是空氣動力學研究的成果之一。這與球體繞流（即繞球體的流動）的湍流轉捩及分離流現象有關。
光滑球體繞流時，湍流轉捩發生的晚，與湍流對應的規則流動稱為層流。而層流邊界層較易發生流動分離現象（即流線離開球的表麵），造成球體背後較大的死水區，產生很大的阻力（形阻）。使高爾夫球飛行的距離很小。
而球體表麵有凹痕時，凹痕促使湍流轉捩發生，湍流邊界層不易發生流動分離現象，從而使球體背後的死水區小，減少瞭阻力。使高爾夫球飛行的距離增大。
湍流的摩阻比層流要大，但與形阻相比，起得作用很小，總的阻力還是變小瞭。
高爾夫球表麵的小突起，也能起到促使分離的作用，但突起對流動的乾擾有些難以控製，造成一些側向力（也可以叫升力）。
球體規則繞流是沒有升力的。旋轉會產生升力，但打球時，我這樣的水平是控製不瞭的。合適的升阻比會使飛行距離增大。
