In China, Hainan Island has the longest coconut shell handicrafts history. People began making wine cups of coconut shell as early as the Tang Dynasty. A famous poet of the Tang Dynasty once wrote a poem with a sentence to this effect: Fill this cup of coconut shell with wine and gone is the toxic miasma. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, coconut shell carvings were offered for imperial uses as “Tributes from the South”. By late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty, coconut shell handicrafts have achieved a very high artistic level. |
